The main purpose of this piece is to hold down the somewhat long EJ motor timing belt & prevent any possible pulley disengagement.
Subaru's horizontally opposed engines combust structurally at 180 degrees, therefore increasing the chances of the cams not performing at their max lift. So when you upgrade to aggressive cams & start making serious power, your setup may create unnecessary belt vibration leading to the belt / pulley disengaging from the rotating assembly. Without the pulley in its rightful place, the valves and the pistons are guaranteed to make contact in this situation (a real timing issue). Subaru had created a component to eliminate this costly damage, called the belt guide which is unfortunately too thin and flimsy at times. Especially when you put the engine in a real track day situation (constant high RPM), so it will fail to keep the pulley & belt properly tensioned and resulting in belt whips & timing issue (big problem).
StreetRays [Originals] timing belt guide is an easy & efficient modification for all high power EJ25 & EJ20 motors. Our billet guide will replace your factory (thin sheet metal) Subaru guide and it prevents timing belt jumps and skips when your car is placed in a constant state of high RPM (such as a busy track day), a must have modification if you’re planning on tracking your car.
